Clickjacking: A Serious Threat

I spend more time than I care to these days helping people recover control of their computer from trojans and viruses.  It has become almost impossible to know whether a website is safe from Malware or not.  Part of the reason for that is a concept called Clickjacking.  Here’s an excerpt from a good article on the subject.

The clickjacking concept is nothing new, but the threat that Grossman and Hansen discovered is. It spans multiple browser families and doesn’t even require that a user click on anything. Just loading a compromised page sets off the attack, and clicking on that page will likely make things worse for the victim, they say. “And whether JavaScript is on or off, it will affect you,” he says.

The attacker can slide any malware underneath the mouse such that the user has no idea he or she is in the danger zone. So . . . → Read More: Clickjacking: A Serious Threat

Wireless Connection Problems

Today I got a call from one of my clients who is having difficulty connecting to her network from a laptop. She explained to me that when she tried to connect in the usual way, her machine told her that the security passphrase was incorrect. Using remote support I logged into her network and started by turning off the security on the wireless router. She immediately was able to connect to her network again. We didn’t want to leave the network unsecured, so now that we had a connection established and confirmed that there was not a problem with the router or her computer,  we turned the WPA security back on and changed the passphrase to something new. She was able to successfully connect using the new security passphrase.

Yea!!  Another victory for our remote support services.  The entire process took only 19 minutes and cost only $19 saving the client a minimum . . . → Read More: Wireless Connection Problems

Backing Up: Data vs System back ups

It is not a question of whether or not your computer will crash, but rather when it will crash. Backups are the only way to avoid the pain and frustration of losing your precious data. It’s important to understand the difference between data backups and system backups. Some backup programs only backup your personal data, like photos, wordprocessing documents spreadsheets, videos, music etc. An example of this kind of backup is the functionality built into Microsoft OneCare. OneCare is a great program to automate all of your system maintenance needs including backup. When your computer crashes you will absolutely be able to restore all of your personal files, but not the operating system and software it took you months if not years to collect and install. Here’s what I do: Microsoft OneCare automatically backs up all of the data in my documents once a day to an external hard drive. . . . → Read More: Backing Up: Data vs System back ups
